Level-of-Service Evaluation Method of Pedestrian Weaving Area

Pedestrian weaving behavior is caused by paths weaving of pedestrians’ different walking paths, which manifests as weaving points in walking facilities. The weaving behavior not only influences the pedestrian’s speed and comfort, also has impact on the capacity and safety of pedestrian facilities. Traditional level of service (LOS) evaluation methods of pedestrian facilities mainly consider the indicator of flow and density, but there is mass weaving conflicts in the pedestrian area, the indicator of density can only reflect the crowdedness of weaving area instead of reflecting the disorder of weaving area. Firstly, the paper makes a brief description on the concepts of pedestrian weaving area and its features, and obtains the data of weaving area features and pedestrian weaving behavior under different scenarios through controlled experiments. Subsequently, the paper proposes three new indexes (pedestrian weaving intensity, pedestrian trajectory offset ratio, weaving point density), which consider both the crowdedness and disorder of pedestrian facilities, and then to classify the level of service of pedestrian weaving area by fuzzy c-means clustering method (FCM). A comparison analysis is conducted between this method and highway capaicty manual (HCM) method, meanwhile, the paper discusses the applicability of this classification method in practice, and promotes this method to the actual pedestrian facilities management, then to propose some pedestrian management and control measures for pedestrian facilities with level of service classification method.
