Advancing Transportation Knowledge Management Through Research: Projects Develop Guidance and Tools
Adapting knowledge management to transportation agencies presents multidisciplinary challenges. The Transportation Research Board and its Cooperative Research Programs have produced an array of guidance and tools to assist in applying knowledge management to improve the performance of the agency and the transportation system. One tool is the Transportation Research Thesaurus (TRT) used by TRB staff and consultants to support the indexing and retrieval of content for transportation practitioners. The TRT presents a controlled vocabulary that lends structure to transportation knowledge and information. The National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) has begun to assemble a common glossary of knowledge management terms and a sampling of key terms and definitions are included in this article. The article also includes a list of selected TRB resources on knowledge management including publications and projects in progress.
