A SIMPLE ELECTRONIC GRADEMETER

An electronic grademeter for in-vehicle use has been constructed following requests from two state road authorities. The instrument uses an accelerometer as the sensing device and the output is displayed on a meter as per cent grade. The unit covers a range of plus and minus 15 per cent grade, with an in-field accuracy of 1 per cent grade. It will measure grade when the vehicle is stationary, and also on the move if a sufficiently constant speed is maintained. Its behaviour under field conditions is more predictable than previous devices. The instruments will be used in obtaining grade information for the NAASRA data bank. They are an interim measure pending the completion of ARRB project 276 - instrumentation for road surveys. (Author/TRRL)
