Hot for the shade
The city of Phoenix (Arizona) is undertaking a series of complete street projects as part of a movement towards pedestrian-friendly streets. Streets are not being widened in the process; adding capacity or other modes of transportation must be done within the curb lines. Accessibility, safety, as well as comfort (with an increase in shade), are goals. Bike lanes are planned, as well as flashing beacons, for safer crossings. Sidewalks will be constructed and improved, and streetlights will be converted to LED. Pedestrian and bicycle connections to light-rail lines will be created. A Complete Streets Advisory Board has been established, in order to draft policy and design guidelines and performance measures for complete streets.
