TRAFFIC SAFETY. PLANNING PRINCIPLES FOR NEW RESIDENTIAL AREAS

A model used in Radburn NJ, USA is described. The Swedish SCAFT guidelines for new residential planning evolved from the Radburn model. The SCAFT guidelines stress the separation of motorized vehicle traffic on one hand and pedestrian and bicycle traffic on the other. The author discusses the Dutch Woonerf model which does not separate motor vehicle traffic from pedestrians and cyclists. A comparison is made between the various road planning recommendations put forth by different countries. Various methods of speed reduction of motor vehicles are discussed. Also, there is a discussion on the planning of car parks in residential areas. Accident records from Finland, Sweden and the Netherlands are included in the report along with references and a comparison chart of the different models. (TRRL) comparison chart of the different models. /TRRL/
