Aperture Selection for ACO-OFDM in Free-Space Optical Turbulence Channel

The authors propose a novel aperture selection (ApS) scheme for an asymmetrically-clipped-optical-orthogonal-frequency-division-multiplexing-based (ACO-ODFM) multiple-transmit/receive-aperture (MT/RA) system communicating over a freespace optical (FSO) turbulence channel between a pair of cooperating base stations in a vehicular communication system. The authors' proposed ApS scheme is capable of significantly improving the system's achievable diversity gain, bit error ratio (BER), and throughput, while imposing substantially reduced power consumption and hardware complexity. The authors' results demonstrate that the proposed system's performance was improved more significantly under strongly turbulent channel conditions.
