Recent trends in cyclist fatalities in Australia

Cyclists experience up to 10 times more risk of death than car occupants, making them among the most vulnerable road users. Using Poisson regression modeling, the authors examine trends in bicycling fatalities in Australia from 1991 to 2013. Their findings show a decrease in bicycling fatalities overall and in multivehicle crashes during this time frame, but an increase in single vehicle crash fatalities. They suggest continued evaluation of single vehicle crashes and their contributing factors in order to reverse this trend.
