The U.S. Waterborne Economy

The primary mission of the United States (U.S.) Coast Guard is to protect and support coastal communities, marine resources, and waterborne commerce, which in turn protects the livelihoods and safety of these coastal communities as well as the national economy of the country. The measures of the waterborne economy clearly demonstrate how a breadth of U.S. economic activity and the value of the economy is heavily dependent on waterways. These waterways facilitate interstate and global commerce and provide natural resources that enable regions and local communities to offer goods and services, that support their economies and that of the entire nation.
