Comparison of the Laboratory and Field Tests Used for Pavement Design

Many present empirical design methods are based on California bearing ratio (CBR) tests of underlying soils – pavement subgrade. On site testing consists of different methods, and obviously there are problems with comparing these two approaches. The authors deal with the comparison of testing, carried out both on site and in a laboratory, performed to determine deformation characteristics of the materials. These are consequently verified for use in numerical finite element method (FEM) models. The results of this comparison are presented.
