Protecting Storm Drain Inlets: Innovative Designs Go Beyond the Simple Steel Grate

This article brings readers up-to-date on innovations in storm drain inlet protection. The author reminds readers that, in an era of ever-increasing stormwater permitting requirements, many different stakeholders need to learn about installing and protecting stormwater inlets. The article uses case examples to illustrate the types of designs and stormwater management products now on the market, including skimmer boxes, filters, and baffle boxes. Case examples include the Knoxville (Tennessee) area transit maintenance facility; Denver’s (Colorado) use of bright orange geotextile inlet filters, especially in the light rail expansion project; inlet protection devices used at Maryland’s Baltimore Boating Center, a certified Clean Marina; the use of automatic retractable screen stormwater inlet protection devices in use after New Orlean’s Mardi Gras festivities; and the rebuilding of the Naval Academy’s lagoon and wetlands in Annapolis, Maryland.
