Overview of Series EV-E301 Catenary and Battery-powered Hybrid Railcar

The Series EV-E301 railcar is equipped with large-capacity batteries, and it can be run in non-electrified sections. In electrified sections, the railcar can run just like ordinary EMUs by raising the pantograph, and it can charge batteries from overhead contact lines. When moving into non-electrified sections, the pantograph is lowered and the railcar runs on power from the batteries. When braking, the batteries are charged with regenerative energy so as to make effective use of electric power. Also, the railcar can make quick charges using a charging facility installed in the station. The Series EV-E301 can achieve elimination of exhaust gases from diesel engines as well as reduction of CO₂ emissions and noise.
