The BRT Standard 2016 Edition

The BRT Standard attempts to define bus rapid transit (BRT) in a way useful to system designers, decision makers, and the sustainable-transport community. BRT Corridors are certified gold, silver, bronze, or basic based on a scoring system. The scoring system criteria and point values are described in detail in the document. Scoring categories include: (1) BRT Basics, such as, busway alignment, dedicated right-of-way, intersection treatments; (2) Service Planning, such as, multiple routes, control center, hours of operation; (3) Infrastructure, such as, minimizing bus emissions, pavement quality; (4) Stations, such as, distances between stations, number of doors on bus; (5) Communications, such as, branding, passenger information; and (6) Access and Integration, such as, universal access, pedestrian access and safety, bicycle lanes. Points are deducted for issues such as: commercial speeds, bus bunching, and overcrowding.
