Repeatability and Recovered Testing of AC

This article familiarizes readers with some of the laboratory tests that are used for evaluating an asphalt mix. The author focuses on repeatability and recovered testing of asphalt cement (AC), which sometimes needs to be done when laboratory tests were not completed at the time the asphalt was created. Topics covered include changes in mix properties (such as asphalt cement content and gradation), contamination of the recovered asphalt (from vehicle leaks, brake pad wear, etc.), and the effects of extraction solvents. The author concludes by reminding readers that quality of test results is dependent on both the personnel performing the procedure and the calibration and maintenance of the equipment.
