Reservation System with Variable Capacity – Case Study of Serbian Railways

This article reports on a proposed reservation system for passenger rail transport that support variable capacity. The authors used a hybrid algorithm based on Artificial Neural Network and Decision Tree for managing the tickets reservation process in passenger rail transport. Their proposed algorithm provide supports to decision makers by defining real-time suggestions about seat inventory allocations. They note that the main contribution of this method for revenue management in passenger rail transport is its ability to manage variable capacity of sleeping cars. The authors report on the practical use of their algorithm with a case study that uses data that simulate actual circumstances in the Serbian rail network.
