Steel Bridge Design Handbook Design Example 1: Three-Span Continuous Straight Composite Steel I-Girder Bridge
The basic application of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) Bridge Design Specifications to the design of straight steel I-section flexural members is illustrated through this design example. The example illustrates the design of a typical three-span continuous straight steel I-girder bridge with spans of 140.0 feet – 175.0 feet – 140.0 feet. Specifically, the example illustrates the design of selected critical sections from an exterior girder at the strength, service and fatigue limit states. Constructibility checks, stiffener and shear connector designs are also presented.
