COMMUNICATION AND COMPUTER SYSTEMS FOR SHARED TAXI

MAET-OCH DATASYSTEM FOER SAMAAKNING MED TAXI

The purpose of this study is to determine whether shared taxi rides can produce profits sufficient to pay for the additional equipment (computer and communication systems for traffic control) necessary for better utilization of the vehicles. At present there is a great gap between public transport systems and taxi systems in regard to price and service level. This study is based on the hypothesis that there is a market for a middle-of-the-road system, ie a system that will provide a transport from door to door, but not always the shortest way. The main chapters of the report: a survey of existing public transport systems; computerized route planning; techniques and methods for vehicle location; aspects on computer and communication systems. /TRRL/
