Mobile Lidar Guidelines to Support Utility Asset Management along Highways

Throughout the world, public agencies and private entities are struggling to efficiently manage various infrastructure assets. A major component of infrastructure consists of utilities that are routed along highways. However, a key challenge resides in obtaining accurate inventories and location maps for utilities. New geospatial technologies such as mobile laser radar (LIDAR) provide significant opportunities to develop advanced geospatial databases to support asset management in a safe and efficient manner. In many cases, this technology can be combined with other subsurface imaging technologies to provide a more complete survey of utilities. This paper will discuss how recently developed guidelines for the use of mobile LIDAR in transportation applications can be effectively utilized to improve utility asset management within transportation agencies and beyond. It will also describe the development of an interactive, eLearning website to support the implementation of these guidelines.
