This paper illustrates the time scale over which natural oil based liquid fuels will become scarce, and compares alternative fuels for road transport. The time scales are stated, the alternatives are outlined, and 3 areas in which the alternatives can best be compared are considered. It is noted that by the year 2025, natural oil based liquid fuels may be replaced as transport fuel by either liquid fuels derived from coal or electricity stored in batteries. Comparisons show that the electric vehicle has a small energy advantage. The time scales involved are such that research on future alternatives must be pursued now. Vehicle fuel consumption comparisons must be made under realistic conditions. It is noted that the choice of transport fuel may have a large effect on other energy markets.
