Approaches on Container Ship Stability Criteria

The paper proposes new evaluation criteria for container ship stability based on computer calculations. It is known that when sailing through heavy weather, a vessel is exposed to a significant variation of stability in waves and this can lead to a loss of intact stability. Understanding the dynamic stability in waves is a big challenge because a ship’s behaviour cannot be framed in clear mathematical and physical rules. For this reason any effort in order to assess the stability of the vessel is welcomed. One solution to evaluate the response of the vessel in heavy seas according to some parameter variations could be the OCTOPUS program developed by AMARCON.
