PAVEMENT MARKING

The on-site inspection of a pavement marking operation is reported, and details are given of the equipment and personnel involved in the operation. Approximately 3.5 to 5.5 gallons of paint per mile is required for the dashed lines as compared to 10 to 13 gallons per mile for solid 4-in. lines. The feed rate for the Type II glass beads is 4.5 pounds per gallon of paint. The striping truck operates at an average speed of 12 to 13 mph and can be increased to 18 to 25 mph on hot days when the paint requires about 60 seconds (at 80 deg F) to prevent tracking of lines. The application of the paint, recent procedural improvements, and signing for the operation is described. Pictures illustrate the striping truck and position of the operator, the control box, and the bead applicators.
