IMPACT ATTENUATORS MAINTENANCE AND USE IN OREGON

Impact attenuator accident records are summarized. The records provide information on the time, date, location, weather, damage, and itemized maintenance costs for repairing the impact attenuator. Fifteen of a total of eighteen attenuators are of the Hi-dro cell type which have a lower maintenance cost. Fitch barriers which are also used have proven to be high maintenance cost items. Most of the impact attenuators in this study were lighted but there still seems to be a visibility problem with them.
