How green is the sky?

Aviation's emissions-reduction quest is a long journey hampered by political and technical obstacles, but a combination of industry agreement on CÓ monitoring, collaborative engineering efforts and significant progress towards sustainable volume production of alternative fuels is raising the prospect of transformation change. Special report by Kerry Reals. Alcohol's jet thrust : the recent approval of one synthetic alternative to kerosene may have opened a path to cost-effective, large-scale production of low-carbon aviation fuel -- Action for clear air beckons : if the ICAO general assembly votes to adopt the first global CÓ protocol, 2016 will go down as the year airlines showed real intent to address climate change -- Right kind of noise? : open-rotor engines have long promised tantalising efficiency gains but proved mechanically impractical and way too loud--but they may soon be a real option.
