Cellular-based Technologies in Next-generation V2X Communications

Inter-vehicular communication has significant potential to enable diverse applications associated with driving safety, enhanced mobility, and environmental sustainability. In this paper, the authors provide an overview of the state-of-the-art of the short-range communication technology based on 802.11p, followed by a survey of the recent activities in the communication and transportation sectors, where initiatives have been taken to explore the potential of Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology as well as the emerging LTE device-to-device technology for inter-vehicular communications. The underlying drivers for this paradigm shift have also been discussed.
