Evolving the Optimisation of Victorian Motorways: The Managed Motorways Framework
Following the successful introduction of ramp signals around 10 years ago, Melbourne implemented its first fully Managed Motorway in 2010. VicRoads has established a clear set of policies and guidelines to inform Managed Motorways. The latest addition which incorporates lessons learned and looks to the future is the Managed Motorways Framework. Victorian Managed Motorways continue to provide substantial benefits to Melbourne’s road users. Results from the M1 Upgrade show a clear increase in the number of vehicles per lane and sustaining this increased traffic flow is attributed to the success of the active management approach.
