Driving Expert Eldercare Forward—On and Off the Road

The American Geriatrics Society (AGS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) have recently collaborated to develop guidance that will help health professionals address the social and physical needs of older drivers. Older adults account for 10% of annual traffic crash injuries and 17% of annual fatalities. The AGS-NHTSA's guide highlights key issues and challenges faced by older drivers, their caregivers and health care professionals. This article outlines many of the guide's findings and recommendations. It also discusses other research on health disparities and highlights the need for cultural sensitivity in geriatric care.
