PERMANENT DEFORMATION CHARACTERISTICS OF CEMENT-EMULSION STABILIZED SAND

The paper presents the results of an experimental program to define the influence of stress state and cure period on the stiffness and permanent deformation characteristics of a cement-emulsion stabilized sand in repeated load triaxial compression tests. The laboratory determined results are then used to examine the response of the material as a base course in a pavement section to illustrate the influence of asphalt concrete surface course stiffness and thickness, and cure period for the emulsion on the development of rutting in the treated base. Such analyses permit, for example, judgments to be made relative to appropriate thickness of asphalt concrete surface to minimize rutting in the sand-emulsion base for various wheel loads to which the pavement will be subjected.
