Microscopic Simulation of Eco-driving Systems Using Real-world Vehicle Models

In the ecoDriver project (www.ecodriver-project.eu), an eco-driving support system is tested on the road, using both embedded and nomadic devices. The results of the real-world tests are scaled up to the European Union (EU) level using three different simulation environments (Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) Modeller for motorway traffic situations, RuTSim for rural traffic situations and Aimsun for urban traffic situations). Simulation is needed to look at future scenarios with higher penetration rates than can be achieved in the field tests, and to take interaction effects between vehicles into account. This paper describes the integrated modelling approach that was used, in which the same ecoDriver models that were used in the test vehicles were also used in the traffic simulation environments, without any simplification. Some simulation results are included, to illustrate how the ecoDriver system influences the speed patterns on different road types
