Walking Cure: The Forward-Looking Sensor Technology Used for AEB Provides the Basis to Improve Safety for Vulnerable Road Users

This article describes how technological advances in automatic emergency braking (AEB) may prove useful in protecting vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists. The technology used combines a mono camera with a second sensor, to support the need to respond quickly and to work in poor light and adverse weather conditions. The author describes the camera technology used by Continental in its Advanced Radar Sensor 400 family of products. The author also reminds readers that by 2018 the AEB Euro NCAP test scenarios will include two-wheeled vehicles and pedestrian protection testing.
