OIL DUMPING BY TANKERS

BETRIEBBEDINGTER OELAUSFLUSS BEI TANKERN

Ocean pollution due to the drain-off of oily ballast water is many times the pollution caused by tanker accidents. Therefore, the IMCO-convention for the prevention of ocean pollution provides for a large capacity of "segregated ballast" -tanks, sufficient for fair weather conditions. Applying modern methods of seakeeping theory, it is demonstrated how to predict frequency and quantity of the requirement for further ballast water to be taken in the cargo tanks under heavy weather conditions.
