NARROW-GAP WELDING NEARS THE SHIPYARDS

The David W. Taylor Naval Ship Research and Development Center, Bethesda, Md., modified commercial equipment and improved techniques to develop an automated narrow-gap welding machine. This GMAW machine butt-welds plates with 3/8-inch (9.5 mm) gaps between square-cut grooves.
