Dual Aspect: A New Hybrid System not Only Maximized Rear Visibility, but also Acts as a Platform for Rear-Facing ADAS Features and Alerts
This brief article describes a new hybrid system from Gentex Corporation, the Full Display Mirror (FDM) that uses an externally-mounted camera and mirror-integrated video display to provide rear view information to the driver. The system includes a conventional, dimming, rearview mirror which can be switched to display mode to provide a wide, unobstructed rear view using the vehicle’s cameras. The author emphasizes the importance of having the conventional view available, in case of equipment malfunction, as well as to support driver preferences. The author concludes by considering how this type of mirror can be integrated into a full Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS).
