Adaptive Traffic Control for the Conseil Départemental de la Seine Saint-Denis

As part of its traffic management responsibilities over a large territory, the “Conseil Départemental de Seine-Saint-Denis”, a regional administrative council, seeks novel and efficient ways to handle both traffic jams and pollutant emissions with the infrastructure-related degrees of freedom at their disposal. As requirements from end-users or national authorities get increasingly varied, changing and sometimes antagonistic, emerges a strong need for agility in designing and adapting regulation systems. To meet this need, we describe a multi-objective optimization module for traffic lights green phases timing. It is based on an open-source microscopic urban traffic simulator, SUMO and it is endowed with automated calibration and Pareto-based multi-objective capabilities. Trials run have been conducted on a real-world regulation zone benchmark built from field data.
