Bearer independent communication

This paper presents “Bearer Independent Communication” as a complement to railway communication networks, for example GSM-R Systems. Bearer Independent Communication can be used as a substitute for a railway specific telecommunication technology (e.g. GSM-R) or a platform for evolution of railway communication. While GSM-R networks are fully standardised by European legislation and interoperable, branch lines, non-interoperable tracks and stand-alone networks do not always require such a highly standardised and interoperable communication system. In these areas however, the same operational procedures and communication services are used in ways that are similar to main European lines. Therefore the same communication services and features have a need to be available in order to unify user actions, interfaces and processes on communication end-devices across any rail networks.
