Smarter public address system design: applying global best practice

Railway design standards for public address and audio frequency induction loop systems from a select number of jurisdictions around the world have been reviewed. These include standards from Hong Kong, London, New York and Australia. Aspects of the standards that have been explored include signal intelligibility, the noise impact on the amenity of surrounding environs, system architecture and ancillary functionality, among others. This paper seeks to extract examples of standards that can be implemented within the Victorian context with the goal of elevating its PAS design to a world-class standard. The challenges of implementing new design standards are also discussed. The paper concludes by providing recommendations of further steps that will hopefully overcome these challenges.
