Pedestrian Information System in the Function of Empowerment of City Identity

The purpose of this paper is to present the potential of an immediate pedestrian environment that contributes to the construction of a city's identity. The proposed approach is based on the conclusions of research on the communications potential of a city and its unique and redundant artifacts. Special attention of this paper is given to a pedestrian information system that belongs to the category of urban furniture and the effects of its implementation in cities. This research presents evidence of the importance of urban furniture in generating a distinctive physical identity of a city. In addition, the contemporary approach in designing and improving urban furniture highlights the potential for redundant artifacts to contribute in creating a smart city and the way the city is used by its inhabitants and visitors. The outcomes of this paper are in emphasizing the importance of the elements of the physical environment in the city that are in the direct contact with pedestrians. In addition the pedestrian information system can be seen as a navigational system that helps pedestrians determine where they are and where they need to go to reach a destination. On the other hand it has its own identity that can also contribute to the identity of the city as whole.
