EFFICIENT WATERPROOFING OF IMMERSED TUNNELS

The construction of immersed tunnels is examined and in particular measures necessary to ensure that the concrete is impermeable and that tunnel segment joints are sealed. Concrete impermeability is important in order to prevent corrosion of the reinforcement. Methods of preventing concrete from cracking are discussed, which include control of concrete mixture, decreasing temperature difference between section roof, floor and walls during setting, and special measures to be taken during construction of tunnel sections. Details are given of efficient joint design using sealing strips and gaskets to achieve watertight expansion joints. /TRRL/
