The article discusses the design and construction of immersed tunnel systems. An advantage of this construction method is that tunnel tube elements can be fabricated in dry dock while excavation proceeds on entrances and channel dredging. Immersed tunnels constructed in the Netherlands are said to use less material because they are not over-dimensioned compared with conventional tunnels with a circular cross-section. The immersed tunnel construction method is not restricted to sub-aqueous crossings and can economically be used for land tunnels such as the Rotterdam Metro where tunnel segments were sunk in an excavated channel. Details are given of dry-dock construction techniques, design of tunnel elements and their alignment. /TRRL/
