Component sizing for compound hybrid excavators

This paper proposes a novel component sizing method for a midsize compound hybrid excavator in which dynamic programming is used as the optimal energy management strategy. This method combines design optimization with the operating cycle and the control method. A multi-objective optimization method to minimize the fuel consumption and the component cost is also presented. In comparison with the traditional component sizing method, which considers only the power demand, this method allows an overall consideration of the fuel economy, the component cost, the power demand, the control method and the operating cycle. The design results show that the component size requirements are different for different control methods. The proposed component sizing method can deal with the trade-off between the fuel economy and the component cost while ensuring the work efficiency. Therefore, it is more applicable for the design of a compound hybrid excavator. Another contribution of the study is the development of a sizing law which can reduce the computation time of the proposed component sizing method. It uses an introduced variable, namely the number of efficient operating points of the engine, to determine the sizes of the assist motor and the ultracapacitor.
