THE PROBLEMS OF DETECTION, IDENTIFICATION AND LOCATION OF VEHICLES. PRESENT AND FUTURE APPLICATIONS

PROBLEMI DI RILEVAMENTO, IDENTIFICAZIONE E REPERIMENTO DEI VEICOLI. APPLICAZIONE ATTUALI E FUTURE

The use of automatic systems in the detection, identification and location of vehicles, is justified by the fact that such systems provide increased operational reliability and precision, a reduction of manpower costs and a capacity for handling greater volumes of traffic. Existing systems and systems soon to be operative are described. These include pneumatic detectors, electro-magnetic loops, photoelectric cells and telecameras. The article concludes with comments on the possibilities of extending these systems to the entire range of road users by the installation of loops and other detector devices linked to one or more specialised centres according to application, thus giving rise to the concept of the "cablied city". /TRRL
