Nailing the Cheats

Fuel taxes are used to construct and maintain roads and bridges in addition to helping fund mass transit projects. In 2014, these taxes amounted to more than $80 billion. That revenue could be even greater, if taxation agencies can find a way to put an end to fuel tax evasion. This article describes a research effort at Oak Ridge National Laboratory to use various technologies to prevent adulteration by nontaxed liquids and to track the movement of tankers to ensure the proper delivery location.
