NEW METHOD OF CLAY DRAINAGE
NY METHOD ATT DRAENERA LERA
Vertical drains are often used to accelerate the settlement of clay subjected to a load. Certain disadvantages with the generally used sand drains have led to the development of new kinds of drains. The swedish geotechnical institute has designed a plastic drain, consisting of a plastic core, ribbed on two sides, which is surrounded by a special filtering paper. Between the paper and the plastic core, channels are formed along the drain. The thickness of the drain is 4 mm and the width is 100mm. Soil disturbance is one of the major disadvantages during the installation of the sand drain. The plastic drain can be installed with a minimum of soil disturbance. It seems from the test results that the draining capacity for the plastic drains is just as good as for the sand drains. /TRRL/
