INSTRUMENTATION FOR THE STUDY OF TRAFFIC BEHAVIOUR AT MOTORWAY INTERCHANGES

This article describes in detail the development and use of a multiple event timing and recording apparatus synchronised with time-lapse cinematography for investigating vehicle behaviour on the on- and off-ramps at motorway interchanges. A system of pneumatic detectors was used to record vehicle passages. The description of the equipment is accompanied by a small sample of data recorded at a typical on-ramp location of a bridged roundabout interchange. An example of the analysis of these data with reference to speeds and gap acceptance of merging vehicles is also included. /Author/
