Improving Traffic Signals for Bicyclists in the City of Gothenburg

The City of Gothenburg in Sweden is in the process of changing its transport system. The current planning concept, ’access through rapid mobility’ has been complemented with ’access through short distances’. It means that people must be able and want to walk, cycle and use public transport as their preferred means of getting around the city. Especially important are how to create an easily accessible regional centre where it is easy to reach key places and functions irrespective of the mode of transport and other conditions. The concept ’Urban space’ is also essential – how to contribute to more attractive city environments where people want to live, work, shop, study and meet. As part of this work, a number of new measures for improved accessibility and comfort for bicyclists in Traffic Signals are being implemented. This is what this paper aims to discuss.
