POLICE SURVEILLANCE OF EXCESSIVE SPEEDS ON PARTS OF THE ROAD WHERE VISIBILITY IS BAD

VERKEHRSPOLIZEILICHE UEBERWACHUNG ZU SCHNELLEN FAHRENS AN UNUEBERSICHTLICHEN STELLEN

Surveillance of excessive speeds in considered necessary at blind corners, on crests of hills, and during fog. Danger arises when the driver does not adjust his speed to his visibility distance. Proposed methods of establishing minimum sight distances on bends, on crests of hills, at junctions and during fog are discussed, together with the braking deceleration which can be achieved on different types of surfacing. The author thinks that tables should be prepared from which a driver could determine his permitted speed in relation to stopping distance, Preliminary braking time and deceleration value. /TRRL/
