The Ins and Outs of Compact Equipment: Finding the Right Machine for the Job and Deciding Whether to Buy or Lease

This article describes the different types of compact, smaller equipment that might be useful for erosion control contractors. Features such as turning radius are often important in sites where contractors are trying to minimize their impact on the environment. The author also describes the need for training on the smaller equipment; different models available from companies such as Bobcat, John Deere, CASE Construction Equipment, Takeuchi, and Helac Corporation; the types of add-on attachments available; and the role of marsh buggies. For each of the different types of equipment, the author reviews their use in confined settings such as bridge and roadside work. One sidebar helps readers determine whether it would be most appropriate for them to purchase, lease, or rent compact equipment for particular jobs.
