Erosion Control at Oil and Gas Drilling Sites: Protection for a Growing Industry

This article discusses the growing role of erosion and sediment control contractors in providing services to oil and gas drilling and hydraulic fracturing sites. These contractors may provide dust control on unpaved access roads, sediment control, revegetation of disturbed areas, and other measures to protect habitat and wetlands. The author uses sites in the Marcellus Shale region of Pennsylvania to illustrate the types of work that is being done in this arena. Other topics include the increased need for safety at oil and gas drilling sites; the regulations that must be followed; the use of emerging technologies; high standard best management practices (BMPs) called ABACT (antidegradation best available combination of technologies); dust control; control of track-out issues from unpaved roads; and hydroseeding.
