Protecting Inlets and Storm Drains

This article reviews the use of temporary and permanent measures to keep debris and sediment from construction sites out of inlets and storm drains. The first half of the article discusses the use of guards for catch basin and overside drain applications, to reduce the sediment flow into grated storm drain inlets in paved and unpaved areas. The author also considers the costs of different types of protective systems. The second half of the article describes the use of an automatic retractable screen to protect inlets and storm drains in Honolulu; the screen opens during flood events to permit more debris to enter the catch basin, but normally keeps those items out of the catch basin. The article includes quotes from the professionals who have installed and maintained these types of screens.
