Tinted road salt could mean happier residents

In order to improve winter road treatments, in terms of visibility and efficacy, municipalities around the United States are choosing salt additives. One of three public works departments who received the American Public Works Association's Excellent in Snow and Ice Control Awards last year was the Columbus, Ohio Department of Public Service (ODPC). Methods that ODPC used for its ice and snow management are described here, including their search for alternatives to road salt - such as using a product with a bright blue polymeric colorant that helps residents identify when and where streets have been treated after winter storms. An important aspect of using road salt is to mitigate the negative environmental impacts, which is explored here, as well.
