An Overview of Transportation Data

Transportation data is an asset to the state of Texas and a critical foundation for all policy research efforts. The data include: (1) Crash records detailing incident location and contributing factors; (2) Probe speed data to inform congestion management efforts; (3) Census data to show population distributions; and (4) Public opinion data to reflect attitudes and awareness. The purpose of this brief is to provide an overview of transportation data requirements and current transportation public data sources. The brief concludes with an introduction to emerging trends that suggest opportunities for new data sources that will enhance research activities, including a discussion of Big Data.
