Snow Bound

Helping water managers and other stakeholders in western states to predict the annual snowmelt runoff that is so vital to agriculture, recreation, and flood reservoir management is the job of civil engineers who conduct snow surveys. They also maintain a climate record and an engineering tradition that dates back more than a century. This article showcases several of these engineers and their programs, as they conduct their jobs in some of the 12 states in the continental U.S. that comprise the snow survey program: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.
